Named after me...

Some of you may know that at one time I wrote software for the Apple Newton. One of those applications was Avi's Backdrop. I named it after myself because it was originally a quick-and-dirty app for my own use. By the time it achieved popularity, it was too late to rename it. And I didn't have any better ideas for a name, anyway.

Nicholas Riley emailed me today about an app that he ran into on the web:

Glass Onion Software's Avi.

The description:

A Cocoa homage to a very popular Newton app called Avi's Backdrop. Avi is a small, simple tool to glance at your upcoming iCal items without launching iCal.

I'm feeling very strangely honored.

The irony of this is that Avi shows you what's coming up in your calendar. That is a feature that Avi's Backdrop does not implement. On the other hand, what Glass Onion Software remembers is most likely the birthday list feature of Avi's Backdrop, which showed you whose birthdays were coming up. That feature is not (yet) implemented in Avi.

It's a strange thing when one of your programs gets to be so famous that other developers write apps in homage to it. I'd like to thank everyone who uses or has used Avi's Backdrop for that honor.
