Crunch time!

Hello! Didn’t we just start school a couple weeks ago? Anyone out there just beginning to do the reading they should have been doing all term? Welcome to midterm season.

About a week ago one of my professors began talking about the midterm exam that was fast approaching for her class. All of a sudden it struck me, we were already mid-semester! How could this have happened? I cannot be the only student out there who did not see midterms coming at full speed (perhaps I am). Boom! Here we are.

Okay, so now that we have realized the situation, I am going to put float a few different solutions to the midterm blues. First, the weather is beautiful. Hey, no coats for a week. We are not scraping our windshields when we leave for Wayne State in the morning. That is always a big plus.

Since the weather is so nice, we can actually go for a walk outdoors without ducking into the wind on our way to class. Take a moment to look at the trees and check out the squirrels bouncing along. The most exciting part of this being (don’t want to push it) to sit outdoors for a half hour without freezing our bottoms off.

Oh, with any luck we might have the most amazing World Series in the last 100 years. The Boston Red Socks and the Chicago Cubs. Who in a million years would have put money on that match up? The Messiah must be coming.

Let us not forget that our vacations are also on the way. Of course, they won’t be here until the end of November, but I am certainly looking forward to them. Think turkey and football. Who knows, the Lions are looking good for next year. Go Harrington! And the most beloved vacation of all, Winter Break. Where is the warmest place on Earth? I’m there. Don’t bother trying to find me. Winter Break. The time of year when all the pretty Christmas lights are up and people are in their cheeriest mood all year. When children try and be nice to each other because Santa’s watching them. The time to catch up on all the books and movies that we have been so busy studying for midterms that we hadn’t had time to see them in the theater.

Imagine that midterm exams are like a delightful trip to the dentist. Many of us have to work ourselves up to even bring ourselves to make the phone call to make the appointment. Lucky for us, midterms come whether we make the phone call or not. After all is said and done, we are all happy when its all over, whether we are walking out of the dentist’s office or walking out the door of State Hall.

The important part of all of this is that as students we must remember that we are in this together. Remember to smile at your fellow students as they walk through the halls with a pained look on their faces. You never know how that smile may impact their day.

My final five words to all students facing midterm exam season over the next two weeks, don’t panic - you WILL graduate (and don’t forget to party after it’s all over).
